A Triskele of Love

Enzo was sitting outside the Monastery, watching people struggle up the hill with heavy loads for the Monastery.
“I think I am actually on a retreat. I wonder why they struggle, but I am not part of all that”, Laureen said.
“What is the purpose of your retreat”, I asked.
“A purification.”
“Did you achieve that?”
“Obviously not…thought I had. The others were bringing me food in to a cave where a fire was kept.”
“What did you achieve”, I continued.
“Non attachment to earthly desires….it seems pointless…I have a sense I never understood woman”, she said.
The sky was crisp and clear, and the Japanese monks enjoyed themselves while they were searching for medical herbs along the river bank. Enzo thought about how he had been brought to the Monastery when he was a very young child. He suddenly felt a chilly wind along his back, when he thought about the moment the monks grabbed him and his parents deliberately handed him over. He felt a deep sadness striking his mind, but smiled when he thought about his most precious secret – his girlfriend. Suddenly dark clouds were gathering over the horizon. It was time to return back to the Monastery in the distant mountains.
When they returned, disaster struck. Enzo had tasted the forbidden fruit. He fell in love with the beautiful wife of a young warlord. He even made her pregnant. Hidden and holy rules had been broken and the Monastery was beyond any rescue. The warlord suddenly appeared and he killed not only his wife, but also her baby.
When Enzo heard and saw glimpses of the slaughter of monks, he started running back through the woods. Laureen now told me how ashamed Enzo felt about himself. He felt he had lost all his dignity.
To find the answer about all this I took her to “The Council of Elders”.
“Yes, I am standing in front of the council…..I can see you sitting on the left hand side of the Council. You are allowed to listen. There are between 40 – 50 beings in this Council. Around the Chairs neck is a medallion….I don’t understand the signs around this medallion, but in the middle I see three tears connected in to a wheel….I don’t understand…”, she said.
“Did the Council give you the option to choose gender in your present life? Did you choose this life”, I asked.
“I realize I chose it without realizing…I asked for lessons…but I realize that I don’t need to learn about life…I am outside of it. There is a privilege that even nothing is a privilege.”
“What was important for you to learn by coming back as woman this time?”
“To come back in the form where I would be overwhelmed by feelings…it would be like walking through fire….I have got to find a teacher here…there will be teachers there….I know who the teachers are when they present themselves…and that I have to trust the teachers to come to me.”
Suddenly Laureen told me that the Chair pushed the medallion through the energy of her soul.
“What happens to you?”
“Mmmm, to wake up a high level of consciousness…that I would be able to find the teachers more easily…and that I would be able to communicate and understand the teaching gained so far, more easily…so they gave me a piece of the past. The Chairs ask me to be more open…that I should allow myself to get out into the reality of life.”
Later Laureen realized that the medallion was the ancient symbol of a Triskele. She was stunned when she realized its actual meaning – a symbol that represents the three aspects of Dependent Relationship which give existence to all functioning things.
Firstly, phenomena exist by dependence upon causes and conditions. Secondly, phenomena depend upon the relationship of the whole to its parts and attributes. Thirdly, and most profoundly, phenomena depend upon meaning, mental imputation, attribution, or designation.
It was clear that “The Chair” gave Laureen an important message. Later Laureen told me that the Triskele represent a part of her life and choices.
